The Jetty Project

 Our final jetty on the west side of the Yorke Peninsula. A nice quiet jetty - unfortunately a bit close to the sheltered boat ramp, but they have used that to create a sheltered swimming spot.

 Just a bit further south on Yorke Peninsula, Port Rickaby is a pretty quiet fishing village on a very long beach. There's just a caravan park and a handful of houses. So the hetty was quiet too.

 A slightly unusual shape, Y-shaped with two entrances. I'm not sure why but presumably to do with loading and unloading goods. The far, western, end has a southern branch to provide shelter from the south-westerly winds. Like a lot of the jetties in the region it dates to the late 19th C. It was a lovely day but pretty quiet, with only a few fishermen.

 I hadn't visited Arno Bay before, but it is a pleasant and well organised township. The town itself appeared to be a square arrangement built near the highway, with a road linking it to the beachside shacks and the adjacent jetty. There was, at least, one man fishing on it. Near the end was a sign saying that boats should not moor to the jetty as it isn't strong enough. Built in 1882-3, in its prime from 1912 it was 375m long with a 90m head, and much wider. Since 1971 it is fairly standard width and only 206m long.

 Relatively recent, the initial jetty was only built in the 50s and the current jetty was constructed in 1969. Visited on a fine spring day, the Coffin Bay town jetty is very small, and L-shaped with a small arm coming off west near the base. This had a recreational fishing boat tied up, while the end of the jetty had two crab boats. There were a couple of people fishing when we arrived - they packed up soon after, but as we'd seen nobody fishing in Port Lincoln this was still an improvement. As none of this took very long, we also walked along th Coffin Bay Yacht Club jetty a few metres west. It wasn't much bigger and the platform was made of a mesh that flexed as you walked on it. There were several short fingers - so short it is hard to imagine they are used much these days.

 There are a number of jetties in Port Lincoln that we could not get to at all. The first of these, Kirton Point Jetty, used to be accessible.It is now fenced off as it is used for fuel transfers. It is only a short distance from Brennen's and visible from there. It is also curved, which is a but unusual. Then on the other side of Kirton Point, and visible from the Tourist Park, is a jetty at a private slipway. Finally, there is a large private jetty on the south side of Billy Lights Point. I'm not even sure what it is called or what company owns it.

 The big wheat jetty in Port Lincoln is properly called Brennen's Jetty, after the contractor who built it in the 1920s. The only public part is Berth 1, the arm that runs parallel to the silos. We also found that we could get some distance along the main jetty, under the grain conveyor. This section had a number of tuna boats moored on the south side and a tug on the north side. A short distance along there was a gate, but this was open and we could go another hundred metres or so, to the gate and fence which looked to be about half way along.  Louth Bay is a small, sleepy settlement on a rocky headland in Boston Bay. It has a small jetty running north amongst the rocks. Like Tumby Bay, the jetty is visibly uneven.

 It was a strange day today - very hot, but extremely windy. In the lee if was at least 30 degrees, but on the jetty it was so windy that it was hard to walk and felt much cooler. This may have been why there was nobody else on the jetty. The jetty was noticably uneven, undulating and higher on the north side.

 North of Lincoln on Boston Bay, there is really not much in North Shields. But it is on a very long, smooth, pretty beach and a pretty jetty.

 The town jetty has changed a bit since I was last here. The pool used  to be marked by wooden piles and weed-covered net. The new pool has wide floating platform edges. Some parts are very wide, which looks like it's designed to let people sunbathe. There are ladders down the inside and outside, as well as some narrow steps which some people might find easier. There are also a number of ramps which I recall as stretching down into the water but which now stop short and have ladders at their ends. Finally, there was a series of curved booms in the water beyond the jetty which look positioned to diminish the waves? These photos were taken over two days. First, some night shots taken on the 6th around 9pm. Then some photos the following morning. At this point it was extraordinarily windy. So much so that it was hard to walk straight, and you can see this in the chop.

 I don't know whether I have ever been to Port Neill before. It's a very pleasant town, though, on a small and pretty bay. The jetty is in proportion with that. There is not much else to the town - we could see a boat ramp on the south side of the bay, and close to the jetty was a pub with one group of people sitting outside. The jetty was nice and the water looked inviting. Towards the end there was what looks like a diving or swimming platform on the southern side.

 Cowell is in Franklin Harbour - a large, shallow sandy bay with an entrance largely blocked by Entrance Island. So technically it it Franklin Harbour Jetty, but I have no idea whether anyone calls it that. When we were there the foreshore was in the middle of a major redevelopment. Right next to the jetty they were putting in pylons for a marina and it was a large building site. The bloke in the fish cafe was quite dismissive of this and seemed to think it was a white elephant created by an incompetent mayor. Anyway, it's a nice jetty. Entirely empty other than a man walking his dog. A short walk along the edge of the new marina to reach the base of the jetty first. There was a small arm on the north side and, towards the end, a wider platform on the south.
