Coffin Bay

 Relatively recent, the initial jetty was only built in the 50s and the current jetty was constructed in 1969. Visited on a fine spring day, the Coffin Bay town jetty is very small, and L-shaped with a small arm coming off west near the base. This had a recreational fishing boat tied up, while the end of the jetty had two crab boats. There were a couple of people fishing when we arrived - they packed up soon after, but as we'd seen nobody fishing in Port Lincoln this was still an improvement.





As none of this took very long, we also walked along th Coffin Bay Yacht Club jetty a few metres west. It wasn't much bigger and the platform was made of a mesh that flexed as you walked on it. There were several short fingers - so short it is hard to imagine they are used much these days.

A beautiful spring day for what I'm pretty sure is the last jetty outside the West Coast that I need to visit. It looks to be well renovated and in excellent condition. It's actually more recent than many in the area, built in the early 20th Century to ship gypsum mined at Inneston Lake - hence the cutting to winch down ore trucks. It stopped work in 1972. When we visited there were a couple of people just setting up for fishing who seemed to have it to themselves.

Marion Bay

A smallish jetty (less than half the original length) that gives the impression of being well used. We visited late on a Saturday and several fishermen were leaving, only one remaining. But the weather shelters and general wear suggest it is popular. It was still a fine, sunny day but extremely windy, which might be why the water looked so turbid.

Cape Jaffa

 There is a small fishing settlement just south of the modern marina. In amongst the fishing sheds is the jetty. It's not particularly long and kinks half-way out. There is a ramp on the northern side near the base and ramps on both sides, angled backwards, towards the end. The far end of the jetty was slick and slippery with guano and stank for that reason. An early jetty was constructed in the 19th century to facilitate the construction of a lighthouse a few kilometers out on a reef. This later collapsed. Because it's a pretty remote and windswept spot there was no reason to build a replacement intil the 1950s when the current jetty was constructed for fishermen. It was progressively lengthened to the current 257m. It is fairly high, but so was the tide when we visited which gives it the impression of being another low jetty like Port MacDonnell.
