The Jetty Project

 Just before the bridge out to Garden Island and Torrens Island, where the North Arm meets there Port River, there is a jetty and an adjacent floating wharf which I think is a market on some days. The wharf was fenced off when we visited. It was not so substantial as to warrant another visit. West of the wharf is the jetty. It's fairly short with an arm to the right at the end. Fortunately, it wasn't locked when we visited. On the outside of the jetty is a wave barrier of wooden slats. It's a working jetty and had a number of moored fishing boats. They clearly have booms that swing out but I'm not sure what sort of fish they catch.

 I wasn't aware of this jetty - it wasn't on my list and I stumbled across it on Google Maps. And I don't recall having seen it before, although it's next to a boat ramp I've used several times. It looks like it has been there for quite a while, which is to say that most of the timber was weathered, other than the few replaced planks. I'm not sure if this is correct or whether it has been re-used or rennovated as it's clearly never been a working jetty. It is more of a boardwalk or fishing platform, as it largely runs parallel to the mangroves and only a few metres out. Sot there is a short base running out then it turns south east and runs parallel to the shore. And it is pleasantly popular with families fishing.

 Like my last post this is (obviously) not a jetty, but it's on the list that I'm using as a reference, so I have included it for completeness. Actually two platforms, a hundred metres apart, at the very end of Outer Harbour just west of where the cruise ships and car carriers dock. Both fairly new and it pretty good condition. Despite the cold and windy weather they both had quite a few people fishing.

 A wharf - not technically a jetty - but it's on the list and we had some time today, so it's included. This is a small wharf inside the breakwater on the north side of the Patawalonga outlet. There is a large boarding ramp at the eastern end of the wharf, a a quick search tells me that the Enigma III was a ferry that ran from Glenelg to Kingscote (or possibly Edithburgh in one article) in 1997-8. It was stopped as weed and sand silted the dock and required dredging. It is not particularly big or remarkable. In our few minutes there, one fisherman was setting up.

We visited Glenelg on a cool evening, so it was a bit less busy than I'd expected and there was only a handful of people on the jetty. The jetty itself looks as though it was been widened; there is a narrow grid running along the Southern side that makes it slightly wider than a conventional jetty and additional pilings that buttress it along that side.

Last time we were at Henley Beach the jetty was being repaired. They have finished now and it looks fine. The planks still have their red colouration and it will be interesting to see how quickly that fades to the grey that we're used to. It was windy and choppy, and the waves sent up spray around every pile.

Not actually jetties, but for completeness we visited the breakwater at North Haven Marina. These photos are from the base, there was no real path so walking out along it would have meant clambering over rocks the whole way. And this last picture looks out on the breakwater at the entrance to Outer Harbour.

Another smart, well maintained jetty. Slightly unusual as it starts wide but elevates and narrows a short way along. It also has a nice covered area at the end. I enjoy those little amenities which seem to encourage people to make use of the jetty. It isn't as long as Semaphore, which may be why there was nobody fishing on it (in fact nobody on it at all). The tide was out and it extended only a short way beyond the shore.

This is a nice jetty - long and wide. It looks like it was recently renovated - which is the case for several of the jetties along this stretch. There were several people fishing and catching crabs at the end, although there was a storm a few days ago, so the water is cloudy and full of stormwrack.

It was a lovely spring day today - but chilly in the evening. We got to Brighton just after the sun set and stopped for an icecream before walking down to the jetty. It was popular, with lots of people fishing and crabbing. But we rushed to the end of the jetty and back as it was so cold.

19th August 2018 A pleasant stop, not much remarkable about the jetty - other than that there is a shelter at the end of the jetty, where there were a few men fishing. Otherwise it was pretty empty, as most of the jetties seem to be at this time of year. This was our last stop of the day. We drove along to Semaphore but didn't stop, so that will wait for next time.

19th August 2018 This was a bust. Henley Beach is always crowded, so we had to park some distance away and walk to the Square. When we got there we discovered the jetty is under repair. The sign says it is re-opening in September, so we'll come back then and walk to the end.

19th August 2018 The next three posts relate to a Sunday out in Adelaide. A rather cold, windy but fine day. The first stop was Adelaide Shores, between Holdfast Bay and West Beach. Again, I'm not sure I'd consider this a jetty but it appears on our list as 'Adelaide Shores pontoonsand timber wharf'. So we made the stop and took the photos:
