Port Germein

 The first jetty on our week-long trip to Port Lincoln and the longest jetty we have walked so far at 1523m (it used to be moderately longer).

We'd been going quite a while before we reached Port Germein and it had been cold, dark and slightly drizzly when we left Adelaide. By the time we reached Port Germein the sky was blue and the water was crystal clear, although it was still quite brisk.

The water is extremely shallow until almost the end of the jetty, sandy, at it was very calm the day we were there. In satellite photos you can see that the sandy shelf ends is a fairly straight line and that the jetty continues just beyond it, only a short distance into the deep water. We were there at high(ish) tide but at low tide there are sandflats most of the way out.

It is particularly uniform jetty with several steps down on the water on the eastern side but no other structures and it is dead straight with even planks and continuous rails on both sides. This seemed to add to the length.

At the base of the jetty is the lighthouse that once stood at the end. At the end are some remaining pylons stretching a little further.

Nobody fishing today but lots of people out walking.

A beautiful spring day for what I'm pretty sure is the last jetty outside the West Coast that I need to visit. It looks to be well renovated and in excellent condition. It's actually more recent than many in the area, built in the early 20th Century to ship gypsum mined at Inneston Lake - hence the cutting to winch down ore trucks. It stopped work in 1972. When we visited there were a couple of people just setting up for fishing who seemed to have it to themselves.

Marion Bay

A smallish jetty (less than half the original length) that gives the impression of being well used. We visited late on a Saturday and several fishermen were leaving, only one remaining. But the weather shelters and general wear suggest it is popular. It was still a fine, sunny day but extremely windy, which might be why the water looked so turbid.

Cape Jaffa

 There is a small fishing settlement just south of the modern marina. In amongst the fishing sheds is the jetty. It's not particularly long and kinks half-way out. There is a ramp on the northern side near the base and ramps on both sides, angled backwards, towards the end. The far end of the jetty was slick and slippery with guano and stank for that reason. An early jetty was constructed in the 19th century to facilitate the construction of a lighthouse a few kilometers out on a reef. This later collapsed. Because it's a pretty remote and windswept spot there was no reason to build a replacement intil the 1950s when the current jetty was constructed for fishermen. It was progressively lengthened to the current 257m. It is fairly high, but so was the tide when we visited which gives it the impression of being another low jetty like Port MacDonnell.
